It is a space where a centuries old story of friendship and pride lives on a story that has connected Thailand and France for over 300 years.
Rue de Siam: The Siamese Street in Brest
Rue de Siam is a real street located in Brest, a port city in the northwestern region of Brittany, France. This road is not just a central artery of the city but stands as a powerful symbol of enduring friendship between two nations Thailand and France.

In 1686 (B.E. 2229), during the reign of King Narai the Great of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, a Siamese diplomatic mission was sent to France, led by Chao Phraya Kosathibodi (Pan). Their purpose was to foster diplomatic ties with King Louis XIV of France — a mission that would become one of the most significant diplomatic endeavors in Thai history.

The Siamese delegation arrived by sea, landing in the port of Brest before continuing their journey to the Palace of Versailles, where they were granted an audience with King Louis XIV and presented royal letters and gifts from King Narai.

A Humble Gesture Remembered: Crawling into the Throne Room
One moment that left a lasting impression on the French court occurred during the royal audience. Chao Phraya Kosathibodi (Pan) and his delegation, following traditional Siamese protocol, crawled humbly on their knees to pay respects to King Louis XIV. This display of grace and humility stunned the courtiers, who were unaccustomed to such practices, as French custom dictated standing in royal presence.
The scene became a topic of great fascination throughout the French court and in publications across Europe, showcasing the depth of Siamese cultural refinement and respect and leaving an indelible mark in history.

“Rue de Siam” and “Rue de Brest” : Symbols of Friendship
In honor of the Siamese embassy’s historic visit, the city of Brest officially renamed a street “Rue de Siam” in 1742. Previously known as Saint-Pierre Street, the name change served as a tribute to the warm and respectful relationship between the two nations.
In return, Thailand named several streets “Rue de Brest” in areas of cultural collaboration with France a reflection of the mutual appreciation and long-standing friendship.
Rue de Siam Today: A Living History
Today, rue de Siam is a lively, vibrant boulevard at the heart of Brest. A tramway now runs down its center, and the street is lined with shops, cafés, boutiques, and hotels. The architecture along the street blends traditional Breton charm with modern structures reflecting the passage of time.

Yet, two things have remained unchanged:
– The iconic blue street sign at the corner, inscribed: “Rue de Siam – Renamed in 1742 in honor of the Siamese delegation”, and
– The profound historical story that lives on in the hearts of both nations.
